2018-2019 Academic Year Research Programs

Undergraduate Research Programs

 Apply Today!

Are you a current BSP student who is interested in pursuing a paid undergraduate research experience? If so, the BSP invites you to apply to our undergraduate research programs today!

Through generous funding from the Hellman Foundation, the BSP will host two undergraduate research programs for current BSP students in 2018-2019: (1) the Program for Early Researchers (PER), and (2): the Research Fellows Program (RFP). Selected PER and RFP undergraduate researchers will partake in a valuable guided learning experience:

  • Engage in a paid year-long, academic-year and summer research experience (pending PI and BSP review and approval at the end of each semester)

  • Receive mentoring by a UC Berkeley faculty, post-doctoral, and/or graduate student researcher (PER), or continuing lab mentor (RFP)

  • Attend a series of co-curricular research and professional development workshops and seminars

  • Expand one’s personal and professional community network among peer  undergraduate researchers

  • Present at the BSP Undergraduate Research Symposium

The purpose of the Program for Early Researchers and the Research Fellows Program

are to provide independent research opportunities for first-time or early, and continuing undergraduate researchers in the BSP, particularly those for whom financial support would significantly enhance their ability to participate in research.

This research experience is not designed to simply provide technical training. It is intended to involve curious undergraduates  who are interested in exploring biological and related STEM-based questions. Importantly, top candidates will demonstrate why research is important to their overall development, convey passion for discovery in a select research area, and will possess a willingness to share their research experience with the BSP community and others.

Interested? Determine your eligibility by reading the descriptions, below.

Am I Eligible for PER or RFP?

The Program for Early Researchers (PER) is for current BSP students who have little to no prior research experience who are interested in gaining research experience in  biology, or in a biology-related STEM-based lab. If you are currently not placed in a research laboratory, the BSP PER will “match” you with a UCB research lab and mentor(s) based on mutual interest. If you have secured a research position in a laboratory, great! Both parties are eligible for the PER. Thus, individuals who apply to the PER will either be matched with a campus-based research laboratory, or will independently secure a research position in a laboratory (on or off-campus). In either case, PER applicants must have little to no prior research experience. Click here for further PER program and application details.

The Research Fellows Program (RFP) is for current BSP students who have  moderate levels of research experience (or more), who are interested in deepening their research experience in biology, or in a biology-related STEM-based lab. RFP applicants must: (a) currently be established in an on- or off- campus research lab, or (b) will independently secure a research position in an on- or off- campus laboratory. In either case, RFP applicants are not early or first-time undergraduate researchers, rather, they are individuals who are “continuing” their research experience.
